Sonos works on his first Bluetooth speaker. The portable speaker might arrive this fall. One of two appliances that Sonos lately lodged with the FCC is a Bluetooth speaker, as confirmed by The Verge. Sonos directly says in filing for product model S17 that it is “a high-performance wireless speaker and part of the Sonos sound scheme. The primary function of the device is to stream with Wi-Fi, but it also features Bluetooth audio streaming and Bluetooth Low Energy, which is used for simplified setup.”(Added emphasis by The Verge.)

Sonos works on his first Bluetooth speaker

No other previous Sonos speaker has supported Bluetooth music playback, although the Sonos One includes BLE for the same easier setup reason. The S17 product label features a curved blue line running across it, a reference to the unique functionality of the speaker in the Sonos lineup. Like any other Sonos device, it will integrate seamlessly with the company’s multiroom audio platform.

The filing also mentions that a USB-C port and ethernet jack are included in this unannounced Sonos product. The latter is found on all existing speakers of the company.

Other Sonos speakers require Wi-Fi from popular streaming services to play music, podcasts, audiobooks, and other content. But Sonos will support Bluetooth pairing for the first time ever, allowing you to play any audio from a Bluetooth-enabled device and making sure the speaker works when Wi-Fi is not available.

(In its advertising, the firm had earlier mocked the downside of Bluetooth speakers.) Sonos also added assistance for Apple’s AirPlay 2 to its more latest speakers. The Bluetooth speaker represents a new category for Sonos as the company continues to expand through new first-party hardware and collaborations with other companies on its product lineup.

Sonos has lately partnered with Ikea on speakers starting at just $99, and its technology has also found its way into Sonance’s high-end architectural speakers. Sonos sent out media invitations on Thursday later this month to meetings that are likely to revolve around new products coming this fall.
