Samsung delays Galaxy Folding Phone Launching

Samsung delays Galaxy Folding Phone Launching. SAN FRANCISCO: Samsung said Monday that after trouble with handsets sent to reviewers, it was delaying the launch of its folding smartphone.

Some reviewers who had their hands on the early Galaxy Fold reported screen breaking problems. Samsung said it decided to postpone the planned release of the Fold this week after some reviews “showed us how the device needs further improvements.” In the coming weeks, the South Korean consumer electronics giant planned to announce a new release date for the Galaxy Fold.

Initial analysis of reported Galaxy Fold screens issues showed that they could be “associated with impact on the hinge’s top and bottom exposed areas,” Samsung said. There was also an instance where a Galaxy Fold smartphone with a troubling display found unspecified “substances,” according to the company.

“We will take action to reinforce the protection of displays,” Samsung said. “We will also improve the display care and use guidance, including the protective layer.”

A handful of U.S .- based reporters were given the Galaxy Fold flagship phones, priced at $ 1,980, ahead of the official release of the model, and within days of using the devices, they reported screen problems.

Samsung has been developing the Galaxy Fold for nearly eight years, which is part of the strategy of the leading smartphone maker to propel growth with groundbreaking gadgets.

According to independent technology analyst Rob Enderle, the company essentially gave reviewers a “beta product” without sufficient information, such as not peeling off a protective coating that was meant to be permanent.

“For a company the size of Samsung, everything could be avoided,” Enderle said.

The failure of a “halo product” could tarnish the brand and send buyers to rivals to showcase innovation and quality.

“If a halo product fails, people don’t trust that you build quality stuff,” Enderle said.

“It can cause amazing damage. And Huawei is moving up like a rocket, so for Huawei, this might be good.”

Creative Strategies analyst Carolina Milanesi told AFP that a Galaxy Fold she reviewed worked fine, performing even in sometimes messy situations that arise in everyday life.

She wondered if there were some problems with the smartphones being reviewed due to dust, moisture or other material entering the handsets through small openings at the tops and bottoms of the hinges.

“If things get in there, under the screen it can make its way,” Milanesi said.

“There seems to be some sort of real-life test that might not have happened.”

Testing folding phones in a laboratory is a very different scenario than challenging them “in the wild” where they have to withstand pockets, handbags, greasy food, spilled coffee and more, the analyst noted.

Samsung may also need to do more to communicate how folding screens warrant more careful handling than stiff displays improved over smartphone generations.

Milanesi did not expect a slight delay in launching the Galaxy Fold to be a major setback for Samsung, saying that the model was unlikely to be a major sales driver because of its price and that services or apps are still being adapted to the new smartphone type.

According to the analyst, Samsung smartphones tuned to work with super-speedy fifth-generation telecommunications networks are more important to the firm’s close horizon bottom line.

“For 5 G, it’s still early days, but this is the product that will make a difference this year for Samsung,” Milanesi said.

Samsung is the world’s largest smartphone manufacturer and launched its top-end Galaxy S10 device 5 G version earlier this month.

– Add to the woes of Samsung –

Despite recent announcements about its new high-end devices, in the face of weakening markets, Samsung has warned of a plunge of more than 60% in first-quarter operating profit.

Also, the company is no stranger to device problems.

His reputation suffered a major blow in 2016 after a damaging worldwide reminder of his Galaxy Note 7 devices over exploding batteries, costing the firm billions of dollars and shattering its global brand image.

Originally Samsung planned to release the Galaxy Fold on April 26 as scheduled.

While Samsung’s device wasn’t the first folding handset, it was expected that the smartphone giant would help spark demand and potentially revive a sector struggling for new innovations.

Startup Royale and Chinese-based Huawei introduced other folding devices.

Samsung Electronics is Samsung Group’s flagship subsidiary, by far the largest of the family-controlled conglomerates that dominate business in the 11th largest economy in the world, and it is crucial for economic health in South Korea.

Despite a number of setbacks, including the jailing of its de facto chief, the company has enjoyed record profits in recent years.
