Ryzen 9 3950X benchmarks leak in Geekbench and Fire Strike

20 percent Better performance than last-gen

Ryzen 9 3950X benchmarks leak in Geekbench and Fire StrikeHighly anticipated: AMD’s press team must have taken a vacation because it was a busy one this weekend: not only was the Threadripper release schedule leaked, but we now also have entries for the 16-core Ryzen 9 3950X in three different online benchmarks. It is a strong goliath, beating through the trials its predecessor 2950X by 21 percent, 24 percent, and 26 percent.

The Ryzen 9 3950X was matched for its Fire Strike run two days ago with an RTX 2080 Ti and 16 GB of 3200 MHz ram, where it scored 29,663. That crushes the Threadripper 2950X in the same 24,544 configurations with its average score, and also presents serious competition for the venerable i9-9980XE of Intel.

Historically, Intel’s high core count processors have done much better than AMD’s in gaming tests like Fire Strike, but now they only have a lead of 3 percent.

Two Geekbench 5 scores have been posted for the 3950X, but it should be discounted as the multi-core score of one test dropped below the 2950X. However, the valid multi-core result is 26 percent better than the 2950X and just 4.3 percent higher than the i9-9980XE. Single-core scores were 20% and 23% higher than the TR 2950X, and 11% and 14% better than the i9-9980XE.

The following chart compares the new multi-core findings with a fortnight ago Cinebench R15 leak — if you don’t recall, the 3950X also beat out the i9-9980XE in this check. The findings of all 3950X are not TechSpot’s but were taken from online sources.

While putting too much stock in the leaked results of the benchmark is a recipe for disappointment, the fact that the scores of the 3950X were consistently over 20 percent better than the 2950X suggests that this is going to be a chip hell. Trading blows with the 18-core i9-9980XE is equally impressive, though with the newly announced i9-10980XE we’ll have to see what’s going on.

AMD has yet to provide a specific release date, although the 3950X seems likely to join its Threadripper brethren for their tipped launch on November 19.
