If you care about photos, you should skip the Galaxy Note 10

If you care about photos, you should skip the Galaxy Note 10. Hate their supposedly spying butts whatever you want, but all real-world tests show Huawei is objectively the portable photographic hill’s present king. And this graphic shows it will stay that way for a while— at least (maybe!) until Samsung releases the 64-megapixel Isocell Bright GW1 Galaxy S11.

If you care about photos, you should skip the Galaxy Note 10

The reliable Chinese Ice Universe leaker shared the photo above yesterday, confirming that the Huawei Mate 30 Pro will have two 40-megapixel sensors, outstripping the Note 10’s largest 12-megapixel sensor.

“There seems to be [ sic ] a lot of people who don’t know how big the gap [ in photographic abilities ] is,” says the rumored feline in his tweet. “In terms of camera hardware, Note 10 has no chance of beating Mate 30 Pro.”

The Huawei phone will not only have two 40-megapixel sensors, but it will also be gigantic compared to the puny 12MP sensor of Note 10. The Huawei can capture much lighter than Note 10, the Galaxy S10, and the current best camera phone — Huawei’s own P30 Pro.

The latter has a sensor of 40 megapixels plus an ultra-wide lens of 20 megapixels. The combined result of these sensors — all made by Sony — gives some crazy photographic capabilities to the P30 Pro, with sharp daylight photography and really impressive nighttime performance.

Wait for the S11 or find something else

All that said, Ice Universe verified the “significant upgrade” of the S11 in 2020. All we know seems to indicate that the new Isocell Bright GW1 64-megapixel f1/1.72 sensor will be used by Samsung. The GW1 will probably appear first in the next Redmi flagship, according to the rumours. Samsung may make its debut later this year in its own Galaxy A70s.

For each pixel, the GW1 will maintain the same size at 0.8 micrometres. This means that this new Samsung sensor’s surface area will be larger than the Sony sensors used in the P30 Pro and Mate 30 Pro. In theory, the Samsung sensor will be able to produce 9,215x 6,812-pixel pictures crystal-clear in well-lit scenes, besting the P30 Pro.

Using Samsung’s tetra cell technology and remosaic algorithm, the Samsung sensor will join four pixels into one under low-light circumstances. The Samsung Galaxy S11 can potentially create great, light-free images, beating the P30 Pro again.

Of course, we don’t know exactly how the mobile giant based in Seoul plans to deploy its 64MP sensor. Is one or two going to be there? If there is only one, photo quality and light sensitivity may still be the two 40MP Mate 30 Pro.

Not only that, but fresh Sony processors may arrive on the market by 2020. While the Japanese company has not yet revealed its 2020 roadmap, its Alpha and mobile sensor divisions have recently been merged into one. There are reports that 2020 may see sensors of 100 megapixels, which will again leapfrog Samsung’s 64MP.

It seems at this point to be a losing battle for the Koreans. But despite all these potential developments, it seems clear that Note 10 is going to be a hard pass for anyone looking for the best photographic capabilities in a phone. You may want to either wait for the S11 or somebody else to get something.
