Apple reportedly provides Mac with Screen Time, Siri Shortcuts and other iOS features

Apple reportedly provides Mac with Screen Time, Siri Shortcuts and other iOS features. As we approach Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference in June, where the company will unveil its next major releases of iOS, macOS, and other software updates, Guilherme Rambo from 9to5Mac is jumping on some of those announcements. Today, he reports that with macOS 10.15 Apple plans to bring the Siri Shortcuts feature (and probably the Shortcuts app itself) to the Mac.

Shortcuts enable users to create custom Siri voice commands that trigger actions in a specific application. These actions can be chained together— each shortcut can include multiple apps— making the feature a favorite tool for power users quickly. Now, it appears that Apple will bring the same capabilities to the Mac.

9to5Mac notes that Shortcuts would only work for so-called “Marzipan” apps, apps that Apple has transferred from iOS to Mac such as Home, Apple News, and Voice Memos.

The company is rumored to be more planned, and developers are expected to start bringing their own iPhone and iPad apps to Mac computers this year. Since many of those will have offered support for Siri Shortcuts on iOS, replicating that feature on Apple’s laptops and desktop machines makes sense.

9to5Mac says Screen Time, the iOS feature showing how much time you spent using your device and individual apps every day, is also set to debut on macOS 10.15.

With Screen Time, you can set limits on the use of apps, and if you exceed that time allowance, you will need to enter your passcode to continue using whatever app it is. The full report contains other tidbits reportedly on the way, including a redesigned section to manage your Apple ID. Oh, and the visual effects of iMessage will also be on the Mac.

That sounds simple, but from a technical point of view it’s actually quite complicated. reported earlier this week that macOS 10.15 would allow the iPad to serve as an external Mac display. Before that, Rambo revealed that iOS 13 would include a dark mode and significant improvements in iPad productivity.
